The Family Friendly Outback Adventure…
Perth is Western Australia’s capital, renowned for its warm, sunny climate, pristine coastline and relaxed lifestyle. Only minutes away, beaches, vineyards, hills, a historic port city called Fremantle and an island wait to be explored. It has plenty of riverside and beachside restaurants, over 80 kilometres of white sandy beaches, and a huge range of outdoor activities to enjoy including some great international standard golf courses. And for those who like a flutter – it also has a 24 hour casino.
Only 2 to 3 hours drive south of Perth is the Margaret River region known for its excellent wineries. On the coast there are great fishing, swimming and surfing spots: the largest dive wreck in the southern hemisphere and a variety of unique nature-based experiences including the opportunity to swim beside wild dolphins and a walk amongst some of the oldest and tallest trees in the state. For those for whom nature is best experienced at a distance the region also offers lots of art and craft galleries to browse through, interesting small towns and of course, the wineries to visit!
Less well-known than the Perth area is Broome and the Kimberley region, up in the north of the state. Broome is approx. 3 hours flying time from Perth. The region covers more than 420,000 square kilometers, an area three times the size of England, and it is home to only 25,000 people. What makes it special is its culture which is a cosmopolitan mix of Aboriginal, Japanese, South East Asian and Australian influences.
Broome simply oozes with colour. It’s Western Australia’s secret getaway – right next to the Indian Ocean and the gateway to Australia’s last outback frontier – the Kimberley. From its pioneering pearling history to the cosmopolitan character of Chinatown, from the turquoise waters, red cliffs and the endless expanse of Cable Beach…the colours and moods of Broome will capture you.
Broome’s climate is also something to boast about with warm sunny days and balmy nights. The famous Cable Beach is home to many international standard resorts, so you can while away your time easily enough even if you’re not a deep sea fisherman or keen to discover your very own diamond at the Argyle Diamond Mine. Not to mention the unforgettable spectacle of a camel trek at sunset on Cable Beach!
Of course, Broome is a great starting point for getting out into that famous “Red Dirt” of the outback. Treks can vary in length from 1 day upwards, but even if you are of a less adventurous disposition, you can still spend a pleasant week in and around Broome itself.
A leisurely holiday that combines Perth/the South West/Broome and the Kimberley area and mixes beach/forest/wine and the outback would easily take you 2 weeks – fun for either couples or families. Perth can be reached via a direct flight from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or major Australian cities.
