Australia’s Red Centre…
From the inspiring desert landscapes of Central Australia to the wet-lands of the Top End, the Territory is the home of much that is iconic about Australia. Darwin is the capital city, and only has a population of 105,000 people so it is a pretty relaxed spot. A 3 hour drive from Darwin gets you to the Kakadu National Park, Australia’s largest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which covers spectacular woodland, escarpment and floodplain landscapes. It is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna as well as to over 1,000 Aboriginal rock sites dating back 25,000 years. The best time for the flowers is in the rainy season between December and March.
Ayers Rock, or Uluru (the official Aboriginal name), is Australia’s most famous natural landmark. It is the world’s largest monolith and also an Aboriginal sacred site but, far from being isolated, it’s in the middle of a national park with many other attractions. Hotels cluster around the park edge so you’re never too far from comfort. You can still climb the rock, however the Aboriginal owners prefer that you take the enchanting walk around the Rock, and you can also watch it’s changing colours at sunrise or sunset. The airport has good flight connections with all the major Australian cities (2 hour flight time from Darwin). Otherwise you can drive from Darwin which takes approx 15 hours or 1500 kilometres. Most visitors fly into Uluru one day, visit Ayers Rock and the Olgas the next, consider a hot air balloon flight over Alice and fly out from there.
An adventure holiday that combines Darwin/Ayers Rock/Alice Springs might take you 7-8 days. Darwin has direct flights from most Australian cities as well as Singapore.
